FAQ

What are the benefits of using sod?

  • Instant gratification. Sod is a living, mature lawn that is able to be enjoyed faster than seeding. Seeding can take up to a full growing season to establish a thick, healthy lawn.
  • Erosion control. Sod is a great way to prevent erosion on slopes and other areas that are prone to soil loss since the roots of the sod help to hold the soil in place.
  • Reduced weed growth. Sod is typically grown in a weed-free environment, so it is less likely to have weeds than a seeded lawn. This can save you time and money on weed control.
  • Better drainage. Sod helps to improve drainage in your yard since the roots of the grass help to absorb water.
  • Less maintenance. Sod requires less maintenance than a seeded lawn. You will need to water and fertilize your sod regularly.
  • Increased property value. A well-maintained lawn can increase the value of your property. Sod is a great way to improve the appearance of your lawn and make it more attractive to buyers.

How long does it take sod to establish itself?

The amount of time it takes sod to establish itself depends on a few factors, including the type of grass, the climate, and the care you provide. In general, it takes about 2-6 weeks for sod to develop a good root system and start to grow on its own. However, it can take up to 8 weeks or more for sod to fully establish itself.

Following is a more detailed breakdown of the time it takes sod to establish itself for different types of grass:

  • Cool-season grasses:
    • 2-4 weeks
  • Warm-season grasses:
    • 4-6 weeks

Here are some tips to help your sod establish itself quickly:

  • Prepare the soil properly. The soil should be well-drained and free of weeds.
  • Water the sod regularly. The sod should be kept moist, but not soggy.
  • Fertilize the sod according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
  • Mow the sod regularly. The first mowing should be done when the grass is about 2 inches tall.
  • Avoid walking on the sod for the first few weeks.

With proper care, your new sod will establish itself quickly and provide you with years of enjoyment.

Here are some additional things to keep in mind:

  • The time it takes for sod to establish itself may be longer if the weather is hot or dry.
  • If you are installing sod in the fall, it may take longer for the sod to establish itself because the temperatures are cooler.
  • If you are installing sod in the spring, it may take longer for the sod to establish itself because there may be more weeds competing for water and nutrients.

How much maintenance does sod require?

  • Watering: Newly laid sod needs to be watered regularly, especially during the first few weeks. The sod should be kept moist, but not soggy. The amount of water your sod needs will vary depending on the climate. In hot, dry climates, you may need to water your sod daily. In cooler, moister climates, you may only need to water your sod a few times a week.
  • Fertilizing: Sod lawns should be fertilized regularly. Begin fertilizing four to six weeks after you’ve laid your sod.
  • Mowing: Sod lawns should be mowed regularly. Kentucky Bluegrass sod should be cut between 2 and 3 inches tall. Cutting it shorter than this can stress the grass and make it more susceptible to weeds and diseases. Cutting it too long can also be a problem, as it can make the lawn more prone to thatch buildup.
  • Weed control: Weeds can be a problem for sod lawns. Weeds should be controlled as soon as they are seen. Weed control can be done with herbicides or by hand-pulling weeds.
  • Aeration: Sod lawns should be aerated regularly. Aeration helps to improve the drainage and airflow in the soil.

With proper care and maintenance, your sod lawn will be healthy and beautiful for many years to come.

What is the best time of year to install sod?

The best time of year to install sod depends on the type of grass you are installing. Cool-season grasses, such as Kentucky Bluegrass and tall fescue, are best installed in the early spring or fall.

Following is a more detailed breakdown of the best times to install sod for different types of grass:

  • Cool-season grasses:
    • Early spring: March-April
    • Fall: September-October
  • Warm-season grasses:
    • Late spring: May-June
    • Summer: July-August

There are a few reasons why these times of year are best for installing sod. First, the temperatures are mild during these times, which helps the sod to root quickly and establish itself. Second, there is typically more rainfall during these times, which helps to keep the sod moist. Third, there is less competition from weeds during these times, which helps the sod to grow more quickly.

With proper care, your new sod will establish itself quickly and provide you with years of enjoyment.

What is your installation process?

  1. Prepare the soil. Remove any existing vegetation and loosen the soil. Rake the soil smooth to create a level surface.
  2. Apply fertilizer. Use a starter fertilizer to help the sod roots develop. Follow the directions on the fertilizer label.
  3. Lay the sod. Lay the sod in a brick-like pattern, overlapping the edges by 2-3 inches. Press the sod firmly into the soil to remove any air pockets.
  4. Water the sod. Water the sod thoroughly, soaking the soil to a depth of 3-4 inches. Water the sod regularly for the first few weeks to help it establish its roots.

Tips for installing Kentucky Bluegrass sod:

  • Do not walk on the sod while it is still wet.
  • If you are installing sod on a slope, lay it at an angle to prevent erosion.
  • Water the sod deeply and regularly, especially during hot, dry weather.
